2010 Workshop Schedule

Hello!

Wow, what a winter this has been—for pretty much everyone. It was even cold when we were in Florida recently. It makes us look forward to our  Smokies workshop in April—we're ready for spring.  And then by the time summer comes we'll be ready for some cool weather so our  Iceland trip should fit the bill for that. And then  Morocco will round out the year for our major workshops for us. We will also have a number of local workshops including one of our popular  Chattanooga Photo Safari's which will also be coming up in late April, and a number of  short evening classes covering a variety of topics. We hope that you can join us for one or more of them.

We finally have gotten some of our images out online. We started with 55  images from Iceland from our last trip.  I was rather embarrassed not to have put them out there sooner when I realized how little effort it was to get them out there under Picasaweb.  And speaking of easy, Tom went over yesterday to quickly print a few images at CVS and discovered that for less than $15 you can create a DVD with 40 or so images on a Kodak kiosk in a very short time. There is a large selection of music (without copyright restrictions), the Ken Burns effect is applied for you, and the slides are timed so the slideshow ends when the music does. It even comes with a nice case with one of your pictures and a title on the front. You would have more control if you did it on your computer, but if you are in a hurry or are a person who doesn't like to work on a computer, it's really pretty cool.

Have a wonderful spring!

Canon Rebel T1i

I got my Valentine present a little early--the Canon Rebel T1i. I had been enjoying my Fuji Finepix S100fs as a supplement to my video work, but since I have been doing more still images lately moving up to an SLR has been enjoyable. I've found it to be a very easy camera to figure out and having a manual focus that is easy to use and a shutter with no delay has been great. The 15 megapixels are more than sufficient to make enlargements or to allow for some significant cropping. I was amazed when the autofocus easily picked up a rocket being launched in the distance and birds in flight. My next adventure with the camera will be to tackle the HD video. The camera is a good bargain for the price and since Canon announced a new model right after Tom bought it for me (typical), the price will probably be coming down more fairly soon. Canon did its usual trick of changing the battery with this model so batteries from our previous Rebel don’t fit.

Photography in Central Florida

We actually took a vacation and did quite a bit of photography in Central Florida.

On the way down we stopped at the Atlanta Botanical Garden to photograph orchids. Their ' Orchid Daze: Towers of Flowers' exhibit highlights one of the largest orchid collections in the US. It runs through April 11 and is really something to see. We used our stabilized lenses rather than a tripod to allow us to work quickly as we got into the right position for the flowers. Check out the colorful dart frogs while you are there.

We, of course, went to the theme parks while we were in the Orlando area. You can do a considerable amount of wildlife photography in Animal Kingdom and also in Busch Gardens. They are great places for animal and bird portraits and also good places to practice your skills.  It had been several years since we'd been to Busch Gardens and we were pleasantly surprised to find that even though the free beer and the Budweiser horses are gone there is a much greater emphasis on animals than there was the last time we were there. Both of these parks are concerned with rehabilitation and education. And it was refreshing that photography is almost encouraged.
