Hello!

Spring is rapidly changing into summer here. There is something about this time of year that is truly spectacular.  When the leaves are not quite fully out you are more aware of the interesting shapes of trunks and branches, especially after a shower when they are almost black and in beautiful contrast to the bright green leaves. The freshness of everything and the rapid changes from day to day are reminders that many of the beautiful things in nature are very fleeting and you need to photograph them when you see them. Or at least take time to look at them.

As I am sitting here writing this, a crow has just flown by in hot pursuit of a barred owl.  Apparently crows take exception to the fact that owls tend to hunt them at night. Two owls and at least one baby have been hanging around our house and in fact earlier this morning I happened to look out the window and there sat an owl in a branch not far from the window. This image was taken from inside the house. It was a nice way to start the day.

We will be off to Ireland next week.  This will be Ireland trip number 8 and we are looking forward to being there a different month and also to adding a new location for part of the trip. Deciding whether to repeat something you thoroughly enjoy or trying something a bit new is always a difficult decision to make.  But we are not getting any younger and there is so much of the world yet to see.

We still have a few openings for our Newfoundland trip in July and our Sierra trip in October. Because of the difference in exchange rates, the price of the Newfoundland trip has been reduced by $400. We are also looking forward to our local Picture the Aquarium evening workshops in June.  They are always fun and we moved them back a bit from when they were originally scheduled so the new Jellies: Living Art exhibit will be open.

 Enjoy your summer photography!

 Jellies: Living Art

This new exhibit at the Tennessee Aquarium is a joint project with the Hunter Museum of American Art.  Colorful jellyfish will be paired with glass art objects that characterize the colors, patterns and movement of jellies to create an interesting combination. The glass work is from four glass artists including Dale Chihuly. Photography of the glasswork portion of the exhibit is for personal use only. At the same time the Hunter Museum will have on display the "Laguna Murano Chandelier" by Mr. Chihuly. This work covers 1500 square feet and consists of 1400 individually blown glass objects.  It should be interesting to see.

 More Creativity Projects

As we've mentioned before, Tom is really interested in creativity in general and therefore the creative aspects of photography.  Tom may eventually move to the creative aspects of post processing on the computer, but for now he is more interested in working with his subjects in new ways. His latest efforts have been with flowers with crumpled aluminum foil and other unusual backgrounds found around the house and flowers frozen in ice. For the ice it's a good idea to use distilled water.
