 Night Photography

It's always fun to try something a little different and with the short days this is a great time of year to do some night photography.  Our friend Harold Stinnette who joins us in the Smokies called and asked if we'd like to go out and photograph some around Chattanooga.  Our city is a great place for night photography with all the holiday lights that stay lit through February and the Tennessee River reflecting many of them. Of course you want to take along your tripod so you can utilize those slow shutter speeds and it's important to dress warmly. We are lucky that it's safe to be out after dark in our city, not an insignificant issue when you have a bunch of camera equipment with you. But even when in a safe place, it's always good to be with someone else and not put your camera bag down where you could trip on it or forget when you put it or have someone walk away with it.

 Black and White Photography

It seems that every photo magazine you pick up these days has some article or sometimes the entire issue devoted to black and white photography. There are still a number of people using black and white film, some of them using the traditional darkroom and others then scanning their film and working in the digital darkroom.  For the digital photographer, we recommend shooting in color and then converting to black and white after the fact.  Those shooting RAW are pretty much doing this anyway, but JPEG photographers often have the ability to set their camera to convert their images to black and white. We have found that we have more flexibility when we shoot in color and then convert the images after the fact.  The post processing options for digital photography are rapidly improving and this approach gives us more choices in terms of interpreting our images.  We also avoid that very annoying problem of forgetting to set the camera back to color after you've taken the black and white image. There is also the added advantage that then we can have both a black and white and color photograph of the same image.

 WTCI-TV  PBS Program

Last summer Karen Elliott, who hosts an interesting program called Southern Accents on our local PBS station, called and was interested in producing a program based upon one of our local workshops. So we joined Karen and some friends for a workshop at the Chattanooga Nature Center and Reflection Riding Aboretum and Botanical Gardens.  That program will be airing Thursday, Feb 5 at 8 p.m., Saturday, Feb 7 at 5:50p.m., and Sunday, Feb 8 at 1:30 p.m. and then will be available on the station's website wtcitv.org a couple of weeks later.  We haven’t seen the program yet so we're anxious to see it and excited about this opportunity.
