So by all means create some beautiful postcard/record shots of your travels—often achievable by using the beautiful light of dawn, sunset, or foggy days—but then create a portfolio of images that are a little different.  Choose a subject like windows, doors, or even bicycles.  It’s a lot of fun.

 Give Yourself a Photographer's Holiday

(Pat here.) I typically shoot with my Sony camcorder on our trips.  I enjoy video and it's nice to have something that's a bit different from the stills that Tom makes.  The thing is, I really like my video to be rock solid so I pretty much have to use a tripod.  But that can be a real pain in the cities, at markets, etc.  So this time I went out several times with only my Sony DSC-H5 which has a long zoom range (no interchangeable lenses to worry with), image stabilization (no tripod to worry with when you shoot at 400 ISO), I could take vertical images which I can't do with the camcorder, and you don't look like a pro (when you have a tripod people assume you are a pro) so you can take quick shots and not attract a lot of attention. To be honest,  much of the time I didn’t even bother to take the camera off program. I had a ball! I was able to concentrate mostly on my composition and creativity and I actually came home with some nice images that I can combine with my video to make a program with a different look.

My point?  The more we photograph, the more we tend to get serious about all our images—will they sell, will they be good in a competition? There is absolutely nothing wrong with that but sometimes it's nice just to explore, discover, and photograph just for the fun of it. We all need a holiday now and then.
