Experiments in Photography
It's fun to expand our horizons and try something new every once in a while. Inspired by the beautifully creative work of Alison Shaw, Tom experimented with moving his camera slightly during a long exposure while photographing a sunset in New Zealand. Here is one of his results.
Tom's latest project has been creating landscapes from close-ups of flowers. It's been a fun project, especially with all the hot weather when it's been nice to be able to work inside. He always has enjoyed macro photography, and this world of shapes and colors has been fun to explore. Here are a few examples of his creations.
Autumn Photography Tips
After our strange spring and dry weather here and wet weather other places it's hard to know what to expect in terms of fall color this year. Here are some thoughts, no matter what comes our way. We of course like to capture fall color at its peak, when everything is a riot of color. If we are lucky, we like to photograph it in different lighting conditions. Back lit leaves can give us a stained glass effect. Peak color in the mist and rain is very different from peak color on a bright sunny day which is again different from a day with a mixture of bright sun and shade from cloud patterns. The colors are different and so is the mood. The days before and after peak color can offer wonderful opportunities as well. Use a variety of focal lengths to isolate early patches of color among the green leaves (a long lens will compress your subject, making color appear more intense), focus close on mushrooms, late blooming flowers, and colorful leaves and ferns on the forest floor, and later on, a few tenacious leaves still clinging to branches. All have a story to tell. And all are a great excuse to get out and enjoy this glorious time of year.
