Florence and Tuscany With an optional Venice Extension A Photographic and Cultural Journey
Saturday October 13 through Tuesday October 23, 2007 Venice Extension: Tuesday October 23 through Sunday October 28, 2007 (Offered in conjunction with Strabo Tours)
We are looking forward to our return visit to Italy. Our journey begins in Florence. There, we will stay at the Torre Guelfa hotel, one of the city's best-kept secrets. Located just a block from the Arno River and the famous Ponte Vecchio, this small, family-run hotel offers an ideal location from which to explore the city. It also offers us a special treat, from which it takes its name. It boasts the tallest private tower (torre) in Florence, whose terrace offers stunning vistas of the city.
We will spend several days exploring Florence, going out before breakfast to capture the city while it is still quiet. After breakfast we will go out again, exploring the markets, the piazzas, the cathedrals and the gardens. We'll frequently take advantage of our private tower, especially at sunset. Our guides are excellent and will take us to locations that you would never find on your own.
In the Tuscan countryside, we'll stay at the Torre Guelfa's sister hotel, the Villa Rosa di Boscorotundo, a meticulously restored country villa. Situated precisely halfway between Florence and Siena in the famous Chianti region, the Villa Rosa is set among rolling forested hills dotted with vineyards, olive groves, quaint villages, and stone farmhouses. It provides an absolutely perfect location for walks and day trips.
Our day trips will take us to Tuscany's medieval towns and villages: Monteriggioni, San Gimignano, Volpaia, Radda in Chianti, Siena, and others, equally well-preserved. On one of our previous trips, our driver could trace her ancestry in San Gimignano back to 1470. Time here staggers the imagination. Again, our guides will take us to places off the beaten path as we also explore the beautiful countryside with its exquisite light.
We will also offer an optional visit to the timeless city of Venice, including the unique island of Burano, old bell towers and renown bridges, cathedrals and piazzas. We will use the local water busses for transportation and learn to sort the narrow passageways with our guide.
The focus of our trip is photography, but this is much more than a photographic tour. The trip's leisurely pace will provide ample opportunity for you to soak up the history and culture.
