Other Ways to Redeem those Frequent Flier Miles

Hello!

Thursday we will be on our way to Wales on a trip sponsored by the Wales tourism board, checking out locations for a trip to be offered through the Tennessee Aquarium next year.  We love exploring new territory—there are so many fantastic places in this world.

Of course, it's also nice to go back to places we enjoy so we are excited to be in the middle of our photo tour season where we return to our favorite places, see our returning friends and get to meet other photographers who are joining us for the first time.

Since our May workshop after hours at the TN Aquarium has filled, we have added another on July 13. And if you have been considering visiting Chattanooga for a weekend, you might be interested in our early November workshop.  While most of our international workshop are filled, we do still have spaces available for the Scotland trip.  And one last comment about workshops, we will be offering New Zealand with an optional extension to Australia next March.  It's time to be thinking about that one if New Zealand is on your destination list.

 Have a great summer!

 Photographing Close to Home

With the interesting gas prices we have these days it's a good time to start thinking about revisiting or exploring new locations close to home.  Sometimes we forget how much is available close by.  We were with a group of local photographers yesterday and we heard of several places that were new to us and that we now will go check out. Actually, locations that are close by are often where we do some of our best photography because we can take advantage of great lighting or seasonal situations.  When taking equipment in a car, placing a foam mat under your camera gear can reduce the vibrations from your car.  You might try keeping your camera gear in a cooler (no ice).  This can help with the problem of being in an air-conditioned car, jumping out on a hot humid day, and having your lenses fog up.  And if you leave your equipment in a parked car, it won't get as hot.  Keeping the cooler in the trunk is better than keeping it in the passenger compartment as the temperature will not fluctuate as much.

 Report on CNPA Meeting

We had the wonderful experience of being speakers at the annual meeting of the Carolina Nature Photographer's Association at Pawley's Island, SC a few weeks ago.  This is one dynamic organization of over 500 nature photographers from North and South Carolina as well as 7 other states.  Their annual meeting alternates between the two Carolinas, appears to be in locations with a number of great photography locations nearby, has a nice expo, and a nice variety of programs for its members, and is a real bargain in terms of cost.  We would highly recommend that if you live in the area that you check out their website CNPA.org  and consider becoming a member and attending their meeting.

I thank Pat, who was in our Smokies workshop, for mentioning this website to me when I was commenting that I wished that Elements had Curves.  This website has a free solution for this—a way to add in the Curves function as a Style.  It works for Elements 2 & 3, but apparently not yet in Elements 4. This website by Bob Johnson is updated weekly with great photography tips and also has a gallery of interesting images.
