Costa Rica With Panama Extension
Costa Rica: Monday, February 25 through Wednesday, March 5. 2008 Panama: Wednesday, March 5 through Sunday, March 9, 2008 (Offered in conjunction with Strabo Tours)
Costa Rica is a natural treasure with an incredibly rich and diverse array of plant and animal life. It has long been a biological land bridge between the Americas with more than a dozen life zones within its borders. Guided by our Costa Rican Naturalist we will visit a wide variety of locations. We will begin our journey in the Turriabla region where the pre-mountain rainforests, farmlands and surrounding area offer an impressive 300 species of birds and butterflies. We will visit the area of the Arenal Volcano, a beautiful cone shaped volcano, the most active in the country. The Sarapiquis Neotropical Center is adjacent to the 350 acres Tirimbina nature reserve, a lush lowland primary rainforest and botanical garden with 400 native and endangered plants. Nearby, La Selva Biological Station is a rainforest reserve and research station. We will finish our journey at the La Paz Waterfall Gardens which in addition to five magnificent waterfalls also has a large butterfly observatory, frogs, numerous birds and a garden teaming with hummingbirds. There will be many other photogenic opportunities along the way.
Panama is quite a different experience from Costa Rica so we have added a few days there as an optional extension to our trip. Our boat ride on the canal is quite surreal. Huge boats pass by as we ride along the banks of the rainforests watching for monkeys, sloths and other animals and birds. We will also travel up the Chagres River in a motorized dugout canoe to an Embera village. Here you will have an opportunity to photograph the native people in a relaxed way. Back in Panama City we will visit the Miraflores Locks in the Panama Canal. Watching the Panamax boats clear the sides of the locks by just a few feet is a rather amazing feat.
